Does Concrete Need to Be Sealed?
While a concrete wall doesn’t necessarily need to be sealed, there are some cases when it can be a benefit and is highly recommended. This is because adding a sealer will preserve and protect the look and longevity of concrete, not to mention bringing out its rich color. Sealers prevent water from being absorbed into concrete by beading it on its surface. This will help concrete last longer, more so in winter. And a good sealer also possesses nonslip additives, which are great around pools. It even helps to fight stains by creating a layer between the spill and the concrete.
Most people tend to seal concrete that is flat. And a concrete foundation is typically not sealed. Although a concrete wall gets wet, water doesn’t pool on it the way it does on flat work, meaning it doesn’t require sealing as much.
After concrete is poured and left to cure, adding a sealer will help protect it against any future damage, stains, and corrosion. Because concrete is highly porous, it does absorb water. Sealing will help to close these pores and prevent any future freeze and thaw damage that results in cracks.
Why Do You Need to Seal Concrete
If you own a home, there is a good chance concrete was used to build it. Concrete is a common construction material, in addition to being one of the strongest. It is still used to build homes, patios, walls, bridges, sidewalks, floors, etc. If you want to preserve and protect concrete for the long term, consider sealing it.
While concrete is considered strong and durable, as mentioned above, it is porous and prone to cracking. It will also degrade over time due to the elements or sun damage. While it can last for generations, it will weaken and break when not cared for.
